Video surveillance of public places as means of fighting crime is an emotionally discussed topic, and not only since the terrorist attacks in London. Surveillance equipment and Webcams are already part of our daily life. The activities of almost every user of a digital terminal are recorded without his/her knowledge.

The installation "CARNIVORE WEBCAM SNIFFING" is an interactive information graphics. It visualizes in real time network activities that are recorded with the controversial surveillance software "Carnivore". "Carnivore" (from Latin meat eater) was originally developed under the name DSC1000 by the FBI to spy (sniffing) on networks. All network protocols of one or more computers can be recorded, and analyzed to determine the keywords.

camera tracking

A video tracking system with a webcam takes photos of people using the computer, whilst "Carnivore" tracks the movement of the user on the net. The picture of the person is removed from the video image using special software (Processing/JAVA), and newly generated using fragments of the data package recorded by Carnivore. The snooped data becomes visible an can be experienced in "augmented reality" as a digital mirror image of the person under surveillance.
